Public meetings with USU police chief candidates happening this week

By Spencer Burt

The Utah State University Police Department will hold public presentations and forums about the candidates for its new chief on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Taggart Student Center.
Officer Aaron Speedy said the candidates and the search committee will be there to introduce each candidate, and will have time at the end for anyone to ask questions. The forums will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and 11 a.m. on Thursday.
Steven Mecham announced he would be retiring from his position of police chief in 2016, and since then the search committee has been gathering qualified candidates, said Jackie Power, the department's dispatch coordinator. Captain Steve Milne, who has been serving as interim chief since Jan. 1, has also announced his retirement. He will finish his time with USUPD in July.
Power said the new chief will decide when the time comes whether he will choose a new captain or
reorganize.
